How to Build a Giant Washer Toss Game

Double your fun and play larger than life by making a giant washer toss game yourself! It’s the perfect backyard or camping game. Kids and adults will love throwing the washers into the tube in the centre of the box.

Difficulty level: Easy
Duration: A few hours
Before You Start
You can create this game any size you want—just make sure to follow the proportions in the plan. But note that the bigger the game, the heavier it will be. The structure must also be solid so that the box keeps its shape.

1
Measure, Cut, and Assemble the Structure

  • 1.1Measure the structure pieces (skeleton of the box), then cut using a mitre saw.
  • 1.2Following the plan, assemble all sides of the structure to create a box.
  • 1.3Assemble the bottom part, then secure to the other pieces.

2
Measure, Cut, and Secure the Box Cover

  • 2.1Measure the plywood panel that will hide the structure, then cut to size using the circular saw.
  • 2.2Using exterior glue, attach the plywood pieces to the structure to close the box.
  • 2.3Solidify using nails.

3
Sand Down the Box

  • 3.1Using a sander, sand all edges.
  • 3.2Sand all sides.

4
Apply Sealant and Paint

  • 4.1Apply sealant to each corner inside the box.
  • 4.2Apply sealant to all small holes left by the assembly process.
  • 4.3Allow to dry.
  • 4.4Apply a coat of paint.
  • 4.5If necessary, apply 1 or 2 additional coats.

Pro Tip

The sealant prevents water from seeping into the corners of the box. Since the game is intended to be left outside, use exterior paint to make it more durable. We also suggest choosing a dark colour for the box since the rings will hit against it, which may leave marks if the colour is too light.

Person securing a tube in a wooden structure

5
Measure, Cut, and Secure the Tube

  • 5.1Measure the tube, then cut to size with a hand saw or jigsaw.
  • 5.2Paint the tube.
  • 5.3To solidify the tube at the bottom of the box, trace and cut 2 rounds of the same diameter as the tube using plywood to create a bottom.
  • 5.4Place a bottom round on top of the other one, using glue to secure. Then, lower the tube around these rounds, making sure it is positioned in the centre of the box.
  • 5.5Attach the tube to the bottom of the box using small brackets.

Pro Tip

A builder’s tube is a good option for the centre tube, but since it’s made of cardboard, the edges can break over time. Save the rest of your tube to replace this part if needed.
