Wood bird feeder

Easy to make, this small project is a great addition to the yard in order to enjoy the presence of your feathered garden friends!

Measure and cut the wood

  • 1.1 - Measure and cut 2 pieces of 1"x6"x6' at 12" for the front and back.
  • 1.2 -  Measure and cut 2 pieces of 1"x4"x6' at 12" for the sides.
  • 1.3 - Measure and cut 1 piece of 1"x4"x6' at 4" for the bottom.
  • 1.4 - Measure and cut 1 piece of 1"x6"x6' at 10" for the top.
  • 1.5 - Measure and cut the dowel at 5".

Pro Tip

Stay safe while building the bird feeder! Wear work gloves and protective goggles.

Drill the hole

  • 2.1 - In one of the 1"x6"x12" pieces, drill a hole 2" from the top using the hole saw.
  • 2.2 - With the drill bit, drill a small hole for the dowel just underneath the hole from step 2.1.

Prepare the assembly

  • 3.1 - Sand all the pieces of wood required to assemble the bird feeder.
  • 3.2 - Stain the pieces of wood so that they are weatherproof.
  • 3.3 - Let dry as required by the manufacturer.

Assemble the bird feeder

  • 4.1 - Screw the 12" pieces into place to form a square.
  • 4.2 - Install the 4"x4" piece in the bottom and screw into place.
  • 4.3 - Install a hinge at the back of the feeder and on the 6"x10" piece. This will form the top, allowing it to open and close.
  • 4.4 - Add a bit of wood glue into the dowel hole and secure it into place. Let dry.

Fill and install

  • 5.1 - Fill the feeder with seeds and install it in your yard!
