Plantable seed card

Create a pretty and original gift that will sow happiness whatever the event, in just 4 simple steps.

Prepare the paper

  • 1.1 - Gather some junk mail and paper scraps.
  • 1.2 - Tear the paper into small pieces and put them into a bowl.
  • 1.3 - Add enough water to cover the paper. Make sure all the paper is wet.
  • 1.4 - Allow it to soak at least eight hours.

Make the paper pulp

  • 2.1 - Fill the blender halfway with your soggy paper and add twice as much water as there is paper.
  • 2.2 - Blend it until the paper turns into a pulp that looks like oatmeal.
  • 2.3 - Add 4-5 drops of food colouring, if desired, and blend some more.

Pro Tip

If possible, use an old blender that is no longer used for food.

Make the seed paper

  • 3.1 - Place the pan on your work surface and place the screen on top of the pan.
  • 3.2 - Place a layer of the paper pulp onto the screen.
  • 3.3 - Place a piece of wax paper over the paper pulp and, using a rolling pin, gently press the water out.
  • 3.4 - Lay a thick towel onto your work surface and place the paper pulp onto the towel. Cover with a thinner towel and press more of the water out of it.
  • 3.5 - Sprinkle the surface with seeds. To adhere the seeds, add a small bit of water.
  • 3.6 - Cover again with a thin towel and press the seeds into the paper with the rolling.
  • 3.7 - Carefully move the paper on the screen to dry.

Pro Tip

If the paper does not lie flat, place a heavy object (like a book) on it for a few hours to flatten it.

Decorate and plant the card

  • 4.1 - Cut the desired shape.
  • 4.2 - Decorate the card however you wish.
  • 4.3 - Give your plantable seed card to someone who will plant it.
  • 4.4 - Place the seeded paper under 1/8 inches of soil.
  • 4.5 - Add soil on top of the paper.
  • 4.6 - Give it a good drink of water and watch it grow!

Pro Tip

This paper can be offered in different forms: card, label, bookmark, etc. Let your creativity go wild!
