How to Choose the Perfect Deck Material

While cost is often the most influential factor involved in making a decking material selection, there are other factors that the homeowner should consider such as workability, durability, and insect resistance. Here are some options to explore to make an informed choice.

Select the Right Fasteners

Selecting the appropriate fasteners, anchors, and hardware for a deck project is important. Fasteners could begin to corrode, to fail structurally, and to stain materials if the two are not compatible (i.e., PT wood, cedar, and IPE will destroy copper). Electroplated galvanizing fasteners are not recommended. Select high corrosion-resistant stainless steel when available.

There are many hidden fastener systems available as well. Hardwoods such as IPE can also be purchased with the clips already milled into the wood. Composites and vinyl systems are most well known for their proprietary hidden fastener systems.

Go for Environment-Friendly Products

Environmental and sustainability factors are common considerations when selecting deck materials. Pressure-treated wood is now manufactured with chemicals that are less harmful than in previous years. Composites are made from wood fibres and recycled plastics. Vinyl can be recycled into new material. Novelty woods such as cedar, redwood, and tropical IPE can be purchased from suppliers that follow regulations supplied by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) of the U.S. and Canada*.

RONA sells more than one hundred environment-friendly products for deck building. Look for the ECO logo to ensure you are making environmentally sensitive purchasing decisions.

*The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) provides a certification to wood products that have been cared for and harvested with approved sustainable procedures by approved providers.

Pro Tip

Verify disposal regulations rather than tossing scrap materials into your local landfill. Pressure-treated lumber has chemicals that would harm the environment if left to leach into soil. If your scrap pile is considerable, consider offering it to a building re-purposing store.

Apply Stain on a Rainy Day

While conventional wisdom says to avoid staining in the rain, Weather-Ready™ Technology allows for exterior wood surface staining in damp conditions, whether it is hot or cold. It also takes less time.

  • Enjoy the ability to clean and stain after it rains
  • Feel free to mist and apply when it is hot and sunny out
  • Effective stain application down to 0°C (35°F)
  • A deck refinished with Weather-Ready™ stains is rain-ready in just 8-12 hours

A Few Useful Tips

When designing the deck, plan out where the furniture will be placed along with sufficient walk room around each item. Consider adding an outdoor outlet accessible to the deck to reduce extension cord usage.

Pressure-treated wood is regularly used for the deck's framing and foundation structures, regardless of whether it is used as the finish decking material. PT wood is selected because of its favourable cost and durability. Take these factors into consideration whether you are building a one-level deck or a deck with multiple levels.

Keep in mind that when selecting both composite and vinyl decking materials, that each manufacturer may have their own set of fasteners, tools, and recommendations for their proprietary system. Manufacturers often offer checklists and installation videos. This additional support from a manufacturer can be very helpful for a homeowner.
